Where to park in Metz in the city centre? 

If you’re planning to explore Metz’s historic centre,go shopping or visit the cathedral, the pedestrianised streets and the city’s main squares, the most convenient option is to choose a car park located right in the centre

There are several public car parks from which you can easily reach the historic centre on foot:

Car parks in the town centre or in the immediate vicinity

Parking Arsenal – Esplanade| Parking St Jacques Parking Coislin | Parking Cathédrale | Parking Théâtre – Préfecture

Car parks within a 5-minute walk of the town centre

The advantage of these car parks is obvious: you can quickly reach the centre of Metz and start your visit without having to use public transport.

The Saint-Jacques car Parkfor example, is particularly convenient for getting to the shopping streets and the pedestrianised area.

The République area, meanwhile, offers easy access to the Esplanade, the city centre and the shopping streets.

The main drawback: the price

For a visit lasting several hours, car parks in the city centre are generally more expensive than those on the outskirts or park-and-ride facilities.

They can also fill up quickly during busy periods, particularly on Saturdays or during certain events.

Where to park in Metz near the station and the Centre Pompidou Metz?

The area around Metz railway station and the Centre Pompidou-Metz is another particularly convenient place to park

It is often less sought-after than the very centre, yet still offers easy access to the main tourist attractions on foot.

In this sector, you will find, amongst other things:

• Parking Centre Pompidou-Metz
• Parking Gare Charles de Gaulle
• Parking Gare Saint-Thiébault
• Parking Messageries

Why choose the station/Centre Pompidou area?

This sector may be of particular interest if you:

• arrive in Metz by train;
• would like to visit the Centre Pompidou-Metz;
• stay in the Amphitheatre neighbourhood;
• You may then wish to walk to the historic centre (or take one of the free shuttle buses running to the city centre from the forecourt of the Centre Pompidou)
• Look for a balance between proximity to the city centre and ease of access.

The Centre Pompidou-Metz is just a few minutes’ walk from the station,and the historic centre is easily accessible on foot from this area.

Some car parks also offer a short period of free parking. The City of Metz states, in particular, that 30 minutes’ free parking at the Centre Pompidou-Metz car park and the Gare Charles de Gaulle car park.

👉 For a short stop, this area may therefore be a better option than looking for a space in the very centre.

Where can you park for free in Metz?

If your priority is to park for free in Metz,it’s important to be aware of the various options and their conditions

Here are the most interesting solutions.

• Park-and-ride car parks (P+R)

• Some zones with a free parking period of ‘1 hour’

1– Park-and-ride facilities: the best way to park for free

Park-and-ride facilities, also known as P+R, allow you to leave your car on the outskirts of Metz and travel into the city centre by public transport

Metz has, in particular, several park-and-ride facilities:

• P+R Rochambeau
• P+R Woippy
• P+R Foire Expo

The principle is very simple: you park your car at the park-and-ride facility and then use public transport Le Met’ to get to the city centre.

Parking is free with a valid Le Met’ ticket.

It’s therefore a particularly good option if you want to spend a few hours exploring Metz without having to pay for a car park in the city centre.

Why choose a Park & Ride?

This is probably the best option if:

• you’re staying in Metz all day;
• you want to avoid having to look for a parking space in the city centre;
• you want to keep your parking costs down;
• you don’t want to walk far from your car.

2- The free car park at the Saint Symphorien sports complex (ice rink): another great free option

The car park at the ice rink is an excellent alternative. It’s free and is about a 20-minute walk from the town centre.

The journey is particularly pleasant when the weather is fine, as it takes you alongside the lake in Metz.

So you can turn the journey into the city centre into a real stroll.

👉 It’s a good option if you enjoy walking and would prefer to use free parking.

3– The ‘1-hour shopping’ deal in Metz

you’re just popping in to do some shopping or making a quick stop in the city centre, some car parks offer the ‘1-hour shopping’ scheme.

It entitles you to one hour’s free parking in certain areas near the pedestrianised area and the shops.

Please note, however, that this free offer is subject to certain conditions.

In particular, you must register your vehicle and comply with the rules applicable to the area in question.

Free parking is limited to one hour and once per half-day.However, any additional hour is very expensive. After 2 hours and 30 minutes, the user will be charged a flat-rate post-parking fee of €30.

👉 So it’s a great option for a quick stop, but not for spending a whole day exploring Metz.

Free parking in Metz: the times you need to know.

There are also times when on-street parking is free.

Between 12 noon and 2 pm and after 7 pm

On-street parking is free between 12 noon and 2 pm.

So it’s worth knowing about if you’re coming to Metz for lunch and want to avoid paying for two hours’ parking.

On Sundays

On-street parking is also free on Sundays and public holidays

Tips for reducing the cost of parking

• Parking Cathédrale (The Cathedral car park is closed for the time being until further notice.)
  
• République car park (8 pm to 1 am, unless you have an Arsenal ticket for a show at 8 pm)

This option is ideal for visitors who want to enjoy the town centre in the late afternoon.

The Greater Paris area offers several neighbourhoods within a 20-minute walk of the city centre for

• €2 for a half-day (9am–2pm or 2pm–7pm) 
• €4 per day (9am–7pm)

There are 1,250 reduced-price parking spaces available around the city centre.

Located on Rue du Général Ferrié (behind the Porte des Allemands), this new car park increases the availability of parking spaces and provides easy access to the town centre.

A car park open to all residential subscribers in the Outre-Seille neighbourhood, as well as to other vehicles, at a rate of €2 for half a day and €4 for a full day.

👉 If you’re visiting Metz, this is a great way to park in the city centre without having to pay the standard rate for several hours.

• Arrive after 7 pm to take advantage of the evening rate of 1 euro

Stress-free parking in Metz: the simplest solution

All these options allow you to park in Metz, but if you’re coming to spend several days in the city, there’s an even more convenient option: choose accommodation with private parking.

You no longer need to look for a parking space when you arrive, keep an eye on how long you’ve been parked, or move your car whilst you’re there.
